JTL project planning, test instance included

Your own sandbox before setup, a JTL strategy day and a concrete roadmap.

Many JTL projects fail not because of the software but because of poor preparation. Undersized licenses, a connector that collapses at 500 orders per day, print templates that break on the first customs form, DATEV account mappings the tax advisor rejects: these are not theoretical scenarios, they are cases from real practice. TwoPixels GmbH guides you through the planning phase before a single euro goes into the setup.

As an official JTL Service Partner Silver with 6 active Wawi tenants in production, we know what actually works in practice, and what does not.

Why planning before setup is critical

JTL-Wawi is a powerful system. That is exactly the problem: the more powerful a system, the more expensive early wrong decisions become. An incorrectly configured tax class runs through thousands of products. A connector without an auto-recovery mechanism leaves duplicate orders behind after a sync failure. A license variant that does not include POS or WMS forces a costly switch later on.

TwoPixels operates its own fully configured JTL test instance including JTL-Wawi, JTL-POS, JTL-WMS, JTL-Shop, Shopify connector, DATEV export and print template system. Your planned setup is mapped there in advance under real conditions, not in a presentation, but in running software.

  • Typical pitfall 1: Wawi configuration does not match the product catalog volume
  • Typical pitfall 2: Shopify connector does not scale beyond 1,000 variants
  • Typical pitfall 3: print templates break on special characters or multiple languages
  • Typical pitfall 4: DATEV account mapping does not match the tax advisor chart of accounts (SKR)
  • Typical pitfall 5: warehouse topology is not planned to be WMS-compatible

The TwoPixels test instance, your project, played through for real

TwoPixels runs a fully configured JTL-Wawi instance used exclusively for tests and simulation projects. This environment includes JTL-Wawi with all relevant extensions, a connected JTL-Shop, a Shopify test tenant via the TwoPixels Bridge, JTL-POS with a test printer, JTL-WMS with simulated storage locations, and the DATEV export interface.

What this means for you: before your productive setup begins, we run through your most important business processes. Order received, item reserved, shipment triggered, invoice printed, accounting export generated. If problems appear along the way, we solve them in the test environment, not in live operation.

  • What: Full JTL simulation of your planned setup, Benefit: Issues are found before go-live, not after
  • What: DATEV export test with your chart of accounts, Benefit: tax advisor alignment before setup, no rework
  • What: Connector load test with your planned product and order volume, Benefit: no performance surprises in production
  • What: Print template test with your target documents, Benefit: delivery notes, invoices, and GPSR sheets fit from day one

Which connection is right for you?

Choosing the right shop connector is one of the most consequential decisions in a JTL project. TwoPixels advises you neutrally, based on six actively operated tenants running different technologies.

JTL-Shop is a good fit if you need full control over the shop infrastructure, prefer a simple hosting setup, and do not plan complex third-party integrations. The native coupling with JTL-Wawi is the most direct technical option.

Shopify Plus is the right choice for strong international growth, high demand for a marketing ecosystem (Meta Ads, Google Shopping, Klaviyo), or tenants that already run Shopify infrastructure. TwoPixels connects JTL-Wawi and Shopify through its own TwoPixels Bridge, which is more robust and more fault-tolerant than standard connectors.

WooCommerce is an option for strong WordPress dependency or when custom PHP adjustments to existing themes need to be preserved. The connection to JTL-Wawi can be built via REST API but requires closer monitoring.

  • What: Requirements analysis of shop technology, Benefit: decision based on data, not on marketing promises
  • What: Connector recommendation with rationale, Benefit: no purchasing a more expensive connector after go-live

License consulting, what do you really need?

JTL offers various license models that differ in price, feature scope, and scalability. A wrongly chosen license either costs too much or forces a switch at the worst possible time.

TwoPixels analyzes this together with you: how many users access the Wawi simultaneously? Do you need JTL-WMS for warehouse staff? Is JTL-POS used for one or several stores? Is DATEV export mandatory? What is the growth potential over the next 24 months?

Based on these questions, we recommend a license configuration that fits today and still fits in 12 months, with no surprises during a license audit.

  • Analysis of your usage needs (users, modules, locations)
  • License comparison with concrete cost scenarios
  • Recommendation with a growth buffer (not too tight, not too large)
  • Support with license purchase through the official JTL partner channel

Planning output, what you receive in the end

The result of the TwoPixels planning phase is not a PowerPoint and not a proposal with vague descriptions of services. You receive a concrete planning document with:

An architecture diagram showing how the systems communicate with each other: Wawi, Shop, WMS, POS, DATEV, shipping. A timeline with realistic milestones, including buffer weeks for training and acceptance. An effort estimate with maximum and minimum values, broken down by trade. A risk assessment with the three to five critical points of your project and our proposal for how to handle them.

  • Architecture diagram with all system connections
  • Timeline (realistic, not optimistic)
  • Effort estimate with ranges, not flat prices
  • Risk assessment with recommended actions
  • A clear picture of what is possible, and what is not

For merchants from the districts of Friesland, Wittmund, Aurich, or Wilhelmshaven, we offer personal planning workshops on-site, at your premises or at ours on Nadorster Straße 26. For customers nationwide, we run all planning sessions via video conference, with the same results and the same response times.

FAQ, JTL project planning

What does the planning phase cost?
The planning phase is billed as a standalone service package. The effort depends on the complexity of your setup. A simple single-tenant project takes 4 to 8 hours, a multi-tenant setup with WMS and multiple shop channels takes 12 to 20 hours. We give you the price after a free initial consultation.
Can I commission the planning without booking the setup with TwoPixels afterward?
Yes. The planning output belongs to you. You can also hand the architecture diagram and timeline to a different service provider. Of course, we are happy if you carry out the setup with us as well.
How long does the planning phase take?
For a clearly defined project: 1 to 2 weeks. For complex multi-channel setups with many open requirements: 3 to 4 weeks. We agree on a joint timeframe at the start.
What is the difference between your planning and a standard proposal from a JTL service provider?
A proposal describes what will be done. Our planning phase includes a real simulation of your setup in our test instance. We find problems before they arise, that is the difference.
Does TwoPixels also offer an assessment of existing JTL installations?
Yes. We audit existing Wawi installations and provide an assessment of configuration, scalability, and security posture, along with concrete recommendations for action.
